Birth control pills and Acne control
Birth control pills are found to very active in controlling acne in women. The actual mechanism of activity is by inhibiting the production of sebum which is produced by sebaceous glands found on most parts of the human body.
The hair follicles have opening at associated sebaceous glands. So when sebum production is increased, the glands get blocked and the sebum begins to accumulate. Soon the bacteria P. Acnes infect this gland and it gets inflamed. This is acne. If the sebum production can be controlled, we can prevent acne. Androgenic hormones are responsible for higher sebum production. Oral contraceptive pills are estrogen derivatives which reduce the androgenic activity.
Oral contraceptive pills come in two kinds. One is progestin type and other is progestin and estrogen type. The estrogen type of oral contraceptive pills has great control over acne.
There are other kind of treatments available for acne treatment.
